As you might expect from the mask Ric now has to wear, his “Hero Project” wasn’t exactly a huge success. In fact, it flat-out didn’t create another Age of Heroes as he’d hoped.
Instead, his final experiment managed to rip both himself and Liv apart molecule-by-molecule, only to build them back up with an entirely new genetic makeup.
When it comes to Ric — the “hero” that now goes by Doctor Obsidian — his new makeup grants him access to a mysterious dimension. Inexplicably, he is able to use its energy to create and manipulate its matter into weapons, projectiles, and the like.
By the way, do you see that mask? It’s the only thing keeping his regular ol’ human self together.
History + Origin
Ric Moreno was born into tragedy, losing his mother Florina shortly after she gave birth to him. Unfortunately for him, dear readers, his life hardly got any better from that moment forward.
Throughout his childhood, Ric’s father Abel and older sister Flavia resented him, blaming him for Florina’s untimely passing.
Eventually, this led to Ric running away from home halfway through high school. He was soon found by one his teachers who happened to be driving down the highway. That same teacher chose to take Ric in and provide him with food and shelter.
This teacher, Mr. Luis Perez, fueled Ric’s interest in the sciences. Working feverishly for two years, Ric didn’t want to take this opportunity for granted and always put his studies first.
Though he wasn’t the smartest of his class, Ric’s persistence — combined with a few strings Mr. Perez helped to pull — garnered him a full ride scholarship to the university of his choice where he chose a career path in genetics.
Fast forward nearly a decade later, Ric was on the verge of getting his Ph.D. in genetics — writing his dissertation on genome sequencing — when Balam arrived to Earth and ripped the heroes from the planet.
Knowing what needed to be done, Ric convinced his friend and fellow Ph.D. student Liv Silva to join with him on a new project, one that he hoped would introduce another Age of Heroes.
